Here we have a very rare release from Ohio's own Ice Band with vocal group Unique Pleasure. This time we are keeping it to a true limited issue of 200.
This release is much like the Charlie Clemons project, where we took an old private press 45 and gave it a New York cocaine habit, and a new set of wheels, all using the original master tapes and no special additives (like heavy kicks or the like).

"This originally came to my attention via private label 45, played over the old Deep Funk online radio archives, perhaps by Ian Wright or a mate. Ever since first hearing it it was clear that the song really needed a remix. It was great, had all the right elements of production, format, style, but lacked consistency that most (classic) disco songs rely on to hypnotize dancers and make them want to dance for extended amounts of time. All of this became possible after I dug up the label owners and got access to their original 8 track sessions. I promptly had them transferred to digital and started my new remodeling of the Ice Band's already cool song. After making some tough choices about what stayed and went, I finally nailed a strong mix and sent it off to the lab for mixing. Came out juicy and rocking, much stronger than the original 45 pressing, yet so different that the two could possibly be played back to back and nobody would tell. BK ONE (Brother Ali / Rhymesayers) recently contacted me about doing a mix for his amazing collab with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. I was thrilled to get the masters to this tune and go to work. The name of this mix is the Disco Ginga mix, which combines NYC disco with Brazilian batucada, possibly for the first time ever, in one song.

The EP containing this mix is due out on Rhymesayers 12" Aug. 30th. Proud to be sharing space here with the legendary Arthur Verocai, MF Doom, DJ Nuts & Mike2600. Big thanks again to BK for including me on this massive record.

SE 1002 - CHARLIE CLEMONS - The Tom Noble Remixes: COMING SOON
1980 - Inglewood, CA: Charlie's group of immediate music buddies included the members of the Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band, some of whom appear on these recordings. In 1980 he decided to enlist those buddies, and head out to Warner Bros studios to cut a few songs to have made into singles. Not really hoping to get a record deal as much as to make a statement about his own spiritual and political agendas. To get this message through best he decided to lace the songs in the popular Disco style of that era. Though the songs were technically Disco, they lacked the drug induced production and DJ crafted dance edits/mixes that many of the other East Coast indie labels were mastering at the time.

Luckily, Charlie held onto his 2" masters & I convinced Charlie to give me a crack at them. My concept was to take an indie recording made in a world far from the NYC disco inferno, and give it the full on Tom Moulton era disco extensions, as well as a 70's "Crown Heights Affair" angel dust laced mix that the NYC indie labels like Salsoul, Prelude & De-lite would have done. Finding the team and proper studio took about one year. Finally, the mixing skills of stalwart Scott Stallone at Found Sound studios in Philly proved to be a great match for this project, and what we came up with is pure disco fire! Two slamming sides consisting of crushing drums, phaser bathed strings, space echoed (and previously muted) vocals. Not leaving out Dj friendly rhythm edits. No new instrumentation has been added, simply a late 70's disco face-lift for two previous songs which had mad potential, but weren't fully realized.

WFMU DOWNTOWN SOULVILLE interview

WFMU's best show Downtown Soulville, hosted by Mr. Finewine, celebrated it's last show of 2010 in Milwaukee at a local watering hole called Burnheart's. We broadcasted live, did a little talking, a little drinking, and of course laying shit down on vinyl. My segment starts at the 50 minute mark. Finewine reads tracks in between drops, my one tune was Jimmie "the sheik" Green on Shoestring records 7", a soulful little bastard I like to end things with.

LA, 1985: Moral Fiber Records releases "Take Away The Dope", a serious bit of witchcraft laid down by the Prophet Brothers. This is the same group responsible for producing the underground West Coast electro jam "War Zone" on Globell 12" (click to buy vinyl). War Zone (click to hear audio) was released under the guise Mcfarland & Marshall. Each of the singles included the same three man team of Mcfarland, Marshall & Talbert. Both tunes by this 3 man production team are aimed at waging war on the drug insurgence in the city at that time, while using psychedelic street style music subversively to convey a message of self awareness & morality toward youths, urging them to stay off dope. Did it work? Probably not. Is it Dope? Oh yes.

WHEN I posted for Beat Electric, I used to maintain a column called "Raw Boogie". The idea was to highlight boogie joints from the late 80's and other tunes from the quote unquote golden era that had odd mixes, usually from limited recording resources. Now that I have a record label the guest column days are over and it is now time to release these gems on vinyl.

Kicking things off in this department is Colour! Colour's real name is Colouria and she is hailing from the LA region. She and her husband & producer, George Gullet, created a very rare 45 single in the shy 80's. The record is unbelievably rare and highly sought after, and included the standout tune "I Want Your Body (Dancin')" b/w a moody stepper "Deeper". Both are nice examples of synth & drum machine pieces, recorded at home studios. A little more digging into her archives and we managed to locate a lost soul classic entitled "Do I Love You". A killer example of drum machines having soul, "Do I Love You" starts off with stark drum programming as well as a synth slap bass which warm into a stellar vocal performance from Colouria with a charming hook.

Set for a release in late July, we at Superior Elevation have put together "Do I Love You" from unrleased demos backed with "I Want Your Body" to be released on a picture sleeve 45.

Conducted in a new car in Echo Park, parked next to a Laudromat, Tom speaks with Charlie about two songs that will soon be issued on Superior Elevation Records 12" single. The two tunes had both been previously issued on rare 7" singles, very stripped down mixes that managed to remain in obscurity since initial release date of 1979. Recently re-edited and remixed in an analog studio, the tunes have been given a proper disco mix just now, 31 years after the death of disco.

TOM NOBLE - Tell us who the band was?

CHARLIE CLEMONS - All them cats gone.
It was mainly us three, Melvin Webb (Bill Withers band) on drums, Melvin Dunlap (Bill Withers, Charles Wright 103rd st Rhythm band) on bass, and me on guitar. But then we had some others, they all dead now (laughs). Between alcohol and women they all dead now.

TN - Where were you when Melvin Dunlap was playing with Charles Wright & Bill Withers (Melvin played bass on classics such as "Express Yourself" & "Use Me Up")?

CC - I wasn't on any of those with them, I used to run around with Melvin (Dunlap). I came from the Ojays. Melvin (Dunlap) came from the Ojays. He was a ojays player then got in touch with Watts 103 guys. Some guy in Watts started the group, The 103rd Street Rhythm Band.

TN - You used to play with the Ojays?

CC - I used to run with the Ojays, I used to play with Vernon Green & the Medallions, that's about it, I had my own thing, Eugene Church & the Fellas, also Johnny Guitar Watson.

TN - How did you make it into Warner Bros studios to record?

CC - Through the arranger named, Rudy Hill. But see I been singing since I was 15, I was singing before Elvis Presley. My parents played blues, and us kids we had doo wap. We did it just for the hell of it, drank, get our head bad, then sing. As far as making money, I didn't think no one could get rich singing, until James Brown came along, then Irealised it was a business.

TN - What was your religious message in these 2 original tunes?

CC - When I did those things, I used to read the bible. I was lead by the spirit to do those records, and I did em. "the devil has made this land his playground", that was in 1973 I wrote that, you hear what I'm saying, it was the truth. Brothers killin one another, gamblin in the hospital--I didn't say that, or I didn't think I even said that, when I heard the playback I was surprised. But these days, you know they actually are gambling in hospitals. Who got the money can get the liver, who got the money can get the kidney. That's how I got all that, I was lead by the spirit is all I can say.

"God Is Fire" - that's also called "Air People", thats about another experience I had. You see we don't see everything, and dogs and animals don't see what we see. But everybody is looking for an image of a man, angels that look like man. But they don't look like man, they not made of earth. They ain't made of water and earth and fire. That's why I made that record, air people, you can't see em. But they with the spirits, they are spirits & spirits are not made of flesh. Ain't that something?

TN - Why did you choose disco?

CC - At the time, that's what was selling. I went to Tito Jackson, he said it sounded alright to him. But I didn't know how long it was going to be in style?

TN - Did you like disco?

CC - Disco is alright with me, Studio 54, John Travolta, and all that. It came and left. What it was was Jimi Hendrix had people listening to a message, and they (the "man") got tired of all that, cause the population was hearing to much of what was going on. So then the gov't backed disco, and got everybody into disco. Boom - boom - boom, they started dancing, and they forgot all about Jimi Hendrix. Now they talking about what Jimi was saying, but he was saying it back then. But he gone, that's the way it is. Disco was everyone dancin, they got away from that acid rock. Then the blues went out the door too.

It's a funny situation! In the 70's we had more money than we ever had. If I had to live my life over again, that's exactly where I'd do it, the 70's. Oh that was a great time for the Black folk, everybody happy, everbody had money. That was the best time of my life.

These 2 edits will shortly be available on 12" single, and is slated to be the 1st release for Superior Elevation Records. Here are mp3's of unmastered ruffs.

"ATTITUDE" is Andre Lavonne's debut LP from 1987. Andre is a multi instrumentalist and veteran funk scenester. After years of performing in various bands, he launched this solo project with the help of his local community, as referenced in the name of the label "Sound Of Connecticut". The material is all performed by Andre. He and Co Producer, Winston Spence, tracked all of the material via VHS player. Great layout by ALP as well.

NICK FRADIANI's "Midnight Lady" was a killer single which emerged on the obscure label Sunset Beach Recordings. Here we have a nice glossy poster that came with the 12" which appears to be a poster used for gigs to support this single. I personally love how Nick merges the Giorgio Moroder (minus sunglasses) look with the ruffness of the East Coast Blvd. The image matches the tune as well.

GEORGE SMALLWOOD's sole LP, "Just 4 You" was recently re-released by Jazzman Records (UK). I just got the CD in the mail, it sounds great. I was happy with how they handled the liner notes and the track order, good job laddies. I helped them out a little by ripping about 6 songs from 7" singles I received from Smallwood back in the day (officially kept for George in light of emergency situations like this!).

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, the band that produced the killer boogie classic "Danger Zone" also did amazing cassette demo songs. These demos were recently re-mastered and given a PPU vinyl release. The 12" EP contains a raw daddy cassette demo version of "Danger Zone".

FOREST TERRY

FOREST TERRY is a legend, though relatively not many people are aware of him. I myself learned about him while digging through a storage space full of funk and soul 45's. When finding his record I could only think two things, "how can I get in touch with him" & "is that a keytar drawn in pencil on his record label?"

In fact, Forest Terry holds the patent to the Keytar.

Forest was a tripped out intellectual who dabbled his hands in electronics and psychedelic funk. His former band "Original Black Sheep" produced one of the most pyschedelic tunes ever committed to wax, as well as the best label design ever. Here we have Forest after launching his solo career, which produced only one single, again flexing funkadelic style beats on "Branching Out" and one acid heartthrob ballad "Satellite Love" which is also featured in this video. I believe the video was made 10 years after the songs were initially released, and it features his Keytar.

I just received news that he has passed away earlier this year. I hope this post can help keep his memory alive. I will post some links to an interview conducted by PJ Gray on Galactic Fractures soon.

The monster jam on this 12" was taken from the break section of an unreleased late 70's funk tune. The original tune has a nice long song structure and vocals. It is quite good by itself, though I had to extend the break on this one to bask in the raw funkiness of the drum and bass production.
